Elly's moms invited us down to Tucson for a visit
Thursday-Sunday, May 12th-15th, 2011
|
1: Prickly pear flowers come in a couple of different colours. The one in Elly's mom's yard by the gate is yellow. |
2: An interesting shrub in the garden at Kartchner Caverns State Park. |
3: Another yellow prickly pear. This one is in the garden at Kartchner Caverns State Park. |
|
8: Stitched shot of the Saguaro National Park, through which we drove every day. |
|
9: A dove perches on the top of a saguaro cactus. |
10: Cholla cactus. This stuff is nasty, or so I'm told. I didn't have the pleasure of a first-hand introduction. |
11: Elly experiences the world the way a bat hears it at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. |
|
13: Perhaps it is time for a somewhat sillier pose. |
16: Saguaro landscape at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. |
|
18: These enormous beetles were pollenating a shrub next to the prarie-dog exhibit. |
20: It may have been hard to tell in the previous shot, but here you can plainly see that he's carrying grass. |
|
21: We arrived at the crown jewel of the museum—an enclosed honeybird exhibit! That you can walk right into! SO COOL! |
22: It's amazing how well these flashy creatures blend into their environment. |
23: What's this? It's a momma honeybird on her nest! |
24: She seemd pretty relaxed—the numerous visitors must have desensitized her to humans. |
|
25: Elly sits back and watches the little jewels dart about. |
26: A flowering cactus of undetermined species. |
28: I didn't realize until I was processing these photos that this is probably a father dove and his almost-fully-fledged chicks. |
|
30: Elly finds a giant (plastic) tortoise shell. What will happen next is obvious to anyone who knows Elly. :) |
|
33: The instructive sign next to this fire-barrel cactus helpfully identified it as a 'biznaga' cactus. |
34: The cactus garden at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is really rather impressive. |
35: Worm-eaten wood is always a good subject for a photo. |
36: Ah, a classic southwestern vista (again, at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum). |
|
37: Back at the house, Elly's moms prevailed upon me to try out their recumbant tricycle. Whee! And also Zzzzooommm! |
39: A prickly pear in Elly's mom's garden glows in the setting sun. |
40: Elly's moms have a lot of prickly pears. This is not uncommon for Tucson gardens. |
|
42: A fire-barrel cactus in the centre of Elly's mom's front yard. |
